All about the Leather Working Group (LWG)

Apr 3, 2025 · Responsibility

The Leather Working Group, or LWG is an independent body responsible for certifying tanneries, and manufacturers of leather in line with sustainability benchmarks.

A gold rating certifies the highest achievement of sustainable production process. This includes water and energy useage, chemical and waste management, full traceability of materials and ethical labour conditions.

Founded in 2005, the LWG has developed an internationally recognised auditing program that assesses the environmental performance of leather manufacturers, focusing on areas such as water usage, energy consumption, waste management, and chemical use. By certifying tanneries and leather-related facilities that meet stringent environmental standards, the LWG helps brands, retailers, and consumers make informed choices about sustainably sourced leather.Beyond certification, the Leather Working Group actively collaborates with industry stakeholders to drive continuous improvements in the leather supply chain. It provides guidance on best practices, facilitates research into sustainable innovations, and works to improve transparency across the industry.

As sustainability becomes an increasing priority for businesses and consumers alike, the LWG plays a crucial role in shaping a more responsible and environmentally conscious leather industry.

In order for a manufacturer of leather to get certification, they must meet criteria for the following areas:

1. Water Usage & Treatment – Efficient use of water resources and proper wastewater treatment.

2. Energy Consumption & Air Emissions – Measures to reduce energy use and control emissions.

3. Chemical Management – Safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals used in leather processing.

4. Waste Management – Effective disposal and recycling of solid and hazardous waste.

5. Traceability & Supply Chain Transparency – Ensuring responsible sourcing of raw materials.
